AAFES //Case Study

In Dec 2010, JDTECK was awarded a contract by the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) to design, supply, install and commission cellular repeater systems in all Army & Air Force Exchange Service stores on the military bases across the USA - from Patrick AFB in the East to Schofield AFB in Hawaii, and from Buchanan AFB in Puerto Rico to Ft. Wainwright AFB in Alaska and everything in between. This amounted to about 105 military installations.

These stores are like your typical big box department store, but on a military base to cater to army personnel, visitors and family. The spec requirements were that these installs needed to be completed in the space of 7 months.

These were all site-unseen deployments in which we were only provided a floor plan of the location to design a complete turn-key solution without even knowing what we were going to face when we arrived on site.

JDTECK also had the job of coordinating all the installation teams to ensure that the scheduled installs took place on time, security clearance was processed, managers would be on site to oversee the teams working during the night, wiring diagrams were completed and arrived at the base on time and that all the equipment arrived at each location on time for the install teams to complete the job - a logistics nightmare.

Some weeks, as many as 10 installations were going on simultaneously with a set number of teams, and once they completed an install at a location they were off to the next location. This was of course in addition to our regular stream of customers. Because all the installs started in the evening after the store's operating hours, it meant that technical support to all these teams was literally available around-the-clock. We were on call at any hour during the night or day to give support, commission systems, answer technical questions, make on-site alterations, resolve human resource matters and manage other details expected with a project of this magnitude.

A job that would take a typical installation company 2-3 weeks to do was completed by JDTECK in 4-5 nights, solely to keep on schedule. Our teams ran like clock-work. Standards were set very high. Any work not meeting JDTECK's standard had to be redone. If it's not acceptable to us, then it certainly is not acceptable to the customer.

The results were that what seemed like an insurmountable exercise, JDTECK accomplished successfully. The time frame we were given seemed impossible to achieve but, we completed a month before the deadline. AAFES was totally blown away by our management skills and expertise to pull off a project of this magnitude and in history making record time.
